The International Cricket Council (ICC) has promptly suspended Sri Lanka's membership due to perceived government interference in its administration. The ICC board meeting recently concluded that Sri Lanka Cricket breached its obligations as a member by failing to manage its affairs independently and prevent government intervention in cricket governance.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Sport ousted Sri Lanka Cricket's national board amid the team's disappointing performance at the 50-over Cricket World Cup in India. Despite a court decision overturning the ministry's move, the ICC deemed it sufficient cause for action.

Sri Lanka currently holds the ninth spot in the World Cup points standings, with just two victories in nine games during the league stage. Their qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan hinges on the outcomes of the remaining league matches.

Scheduled to host the Under-19 Men's World Cup in January, Sri Lanka faces a challenging period amid the governance turmoil. Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe criticized Sri Lanka Cricket, branding it "traitorous and corrupt" in a parliamentary statement on November 3, urging board members to resign.

Following the board's dismissal, an interim committee led by the World Cup-winning former captain Arjuna Ranatunga took charge. Responding to allegations of a $2 million transfer from its accounts, Sri Lanka Cricket clarified that the funds were used for operational expenses, maintaining a practice of transferring USD to local currency accounts for financial obligations in Sri Lanka.
